Jacob Gils (Copenhagen 1963 -)
About
JACOB GILS is a Danish photographer, born in 1963.
Jacob explores the known theoretical and technical limits of photography, searching for the full potential of this medium. The related challenges sharpen his creativity.
Whether it concerns iconic structures, landscapes or the female body, Jacob Gils creates visual puzzles. He creates a visual language. No snapshot photography or other popular genres. He takes several prints of the same object and brings them together, sometimes partly on top of each other so that the viewer can often almost look through the subject. This way he determines the focus. Movement becomes visible in the photo.Vibrant images. The image is both transparent and blurry.
About the serie “Movement”:
“The series Movement was developed out of an interest in pushing the boundaries of the photographic medium and was originally conceived as an experiment and investigation into the potential of the photographic genre. Each of the pieces consists of many fleeting moments layered in one image, which with an almost painterly finesse creates a feeling of time and space with its multiple exposures. The motifs are often of tropes found in nature – often chosen from a personal and specific relation.
What at first glance might appear as abstract, or out of focus, is actually a collection of very sharp images put together. This visually poetic and dynamic balance is representative for my photographic style, and holds both references to impressionist painting, as well as simultaneously maintaining a degree of detail characteristic for modern photography.”
Museums:
The National Museum of Photography in Oslo, The National Museum of Photography in Copenhagen, Fotografiska Stockholm, Museum of modern art in Bogota, Nanjing Museum of Visual Arts in China and The Danish Cultural Center in Beijing China.
