Jorge Luis Santos (Cuba 1973 -)
About
Born in Quivicán, Cuba in 1973, Jorge Luis Santos is a prominent Cuban artist whose abstract work breaks away from the figurative traditions of his homeland. Free from the conventional constraints of Cuban art, Santos developed a distinctive abstract style that has earned him recognition as one of the most important Cuban painters of the last two decades. His work is defined by a bold, monumental style and a diverse use of materials, including acrylic, oil, found objects, iron, and wood.
Santos’s innovative approach and mastery of color and form evoke deep emotional responses from viewers, while his creations are celebrated in major collections such as the Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Museum of Cuban Art Vienna. Widely respected by Cuban scholars and critics, his work pushes the boundaries of traditional mediums and techniques.
After relocating to Miami in 2016, Santos experienced a creative evolution, incorporating a more vibrant palette inspired by his new surroundings. This shift reflects themes of resilience and joy, which have become central to his work. Constantly challenging and redefining abstract art, Jorge Luis Santos continues to be a leading figure in contemporary Cuban art.
